Walking into a hockey shop for the first time can feel overwhelming. Here’s the honest, budget-friendly rundown of what you actually need for your first season in the Over 35 League.
The essentials (non-negotiable)
- Helmet with cage or shield — required for every player, no exceptions.
- Skates — get them fitted at a shop and baked if possible. Comfort beats brand.
- Gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin guards, and hockey pants.
- Mouthguard — cheap insurance for your teeth.
- A stick — ask a shop staffer about flex and height for your size.
What you can rent or borrow at first
- Full equipment sets are available to rent at Carolina Ice Palace for your first few sessions.
- Many teammates keep spare gear — ask around your team before buying everything new.
A few pro tips
- Buy used for your first season. Marketplace listings and shop clearance racks are full of lightly used gear.
- Bag it right. Air your equipment out after every skate — future you (and your car) will thank you.
- Protect the important stuff. A quality helmet and a good mouthguard are worth spending on.
You don’t need top-of-the-line equipment to have a great first season. Get the safety basics right, show up, and the rest will follow.
